ATI X1400 and external monitor

Hi

I installed this week on a free partition Gutsy Gibbon on my Dell 
Inspiron 9400.
Every thing worked fine at home, but at work I have a external monitor. 
When I hooked up the PC to the monitor, the resolution became very poor 
(1024x800) in stead of the 1600x1200 I had running Feisty Fawn.

Is Envy a way to get this configured correctly and of so, how?
