Check your /etc/network/interfaces -- it should look like this:

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.123
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1

Adjust the address line for the address of your machine and the gateway 
line for the address of the server.
