Sounds like the result of trying to display characters for which the
system has no font.

I see little boxes of this kind on web pages and news feeds where the
author has used some ( probably Microsoft) odd "quote" symbols or
apostrophes, for example.

I assume the problem is that these symbols are "non-standard" or outside
the character set available on Ubuntu, but this might not be quite right.

If someone has a more accurate explanation, that would be interesting to
know.
