I have an Nvidia graphics card myself, but I installed Ubuntu 7.10 for
someone else with an Radeon X1950PRO for a while ago. There was some
problem with the fglrx driver from the Gutsy repositories, so I tried to
install the driver available at AMD web site. The installation wasn't
succesfull, because there was a version conflict with dependencies.
Finally I tried Envy, which did the job perfectly. If you are not
familiar with this program, you can read more about it here:
http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html
All I had to do was to download the Envy deb file from the web site
above, right click it and choose 'Open with GDebi package installer' (or
something like that - I translated it from Finnish). The installation
creates a menu item for Envy - I don't remember where exactly.
Installing the driver is easy, as Envy pretty much explains itself.
I'm not sure if Envy should be removed before upgrading the system to a
new version of Ubuntu, but it's easy to remove it (and the driver) just
in case.
