Not entirely sure I can help here, but if you type this in a terminal:
sudo apt-get install apt-show-versions
it will help. Then type:
apt-show-versions libdvdcss (or whatever package you're looking for)
it will show you something like the following:
jack at Nebo:~$ apt-show-versions libdvdcss
libdvdcss not installed
jack at Nebo:~$ apt-show-versions python2.5
python2.5/gutsy uptodate 2.5.1-5ubuntu5
jack at Nebo:~$

at least that way you'll see at a glance what you have to work with
and what you may need for this (and other problems like it)
