What are the differences between the boot stanzas in /boot/grub/menu.lst?
Try booting into the default option, but with "nosplash" and the "quiet"
option removed (when the menu comes up, press 'e' on the default option,
then 'e' on the boot line, change the line, press enter, press 'b').
That'll give you a better idea where it freezes (if, indeed, it does - it
might actually be the splash that causes the problem).
