Two problems with this, though:

1. "man update-rc.d" states that system administrators should _not_ use
   this utility.  Citing from the manpage: "They should edit the links
   directly or use runlevel editors such as sysv-rc-conf and bum instead."

2. Ubuntu is moving away from sysv init scripts and introducing upstart.
   I expect update-rc.d to stop working at some time in the future.
