Really dumb complaint - we hate the light- brown desktop at the start!

Hm. That would imply that there is a file or setting somewhere that
controls this. That one could replace the file or alter the setting without
having to install an alternative desktop. This (

section of the Ubuntu:Feisty wiki talks about configuring the usplash, but
it only goes so far as to allow you to pick which splash from those
installed to use.
