External Hard Drives and UBUNTU

I've got a Western Digital My Book sitting on my desk right now.  It works
fine.  I have had problems with it not being detected by Ubuntu, but if I
shut it down and unplug it and then plug it back in, it usually works. 
Once connected it just keeps working.  

I do end up with two icons on my desktop for it instead of one, but I get
that from my USB stick too.  I wish I knew how to get that to quit.
