Hidden Trash icon

When you said you checked the key, did you go to a terminal and type 
gconf-editor, then go to apps/nautilus/preferences?  If so, is there 
anything else that might lead you to believe that your desktop wasn't, 
in fact, showing?  If so, you might check .config -> user-dirs.dirs
