A newbie with old probs

Good day sir,
I am a Nigerian student,I've always wanted to run Linux,so i tried Ubuntu
6.10,but the installation was unable to complete on my IBM 600e Laptop,so i
tried the 5.10 LTS and it installed,which made me so happy.
But i have some problems with the sound,Infrared,usb mouse ,and my usb network
interface.
i check on different forums,as  a newbie i did not understand most of the terms
they used,I tried to adjust some files but all to no avail, please can you help
me ,please i attached the files i adjusted.thanks
