Sorry for coming back to you after a few days, but did not have a chance to
use the laptop that much.
I have solved this problem: for some reason my session included both the
gnome window manager gnome-wm and the fusion-icon program.
I have removed the gnome-wm and now the computer starts immediately with CF.
