Upgrade or reinstall

I don't think it's possible to upgrade from 5.11 to 7.10. However, I always
prefer a clean install since I customize a lot anyway. I've never had a
problem with a dual boot install since 6.06.
After backing up your important data and configuration files, I recommend
using the Alternate Install disk rather than the Desktop one. When you get
to the partitioning step, if you can, save your Windows and /home partitions
(you did set up a separate /home partition, yes?), but go ahead and reformat
any other partitions.
When it comes time to install Grub, the installer should auto-detect any other
OSes (including XP) on the disk (and give you a choice to locate others).
You can always edit /boot/grub/menu.lst later.
Just read the questions carefully before selecting OK during the install and
you should be fine.
