i got dual-head working but no compiz - says "desktop effects could not 
be enabled".  i do have direct rendering and the proper stuff is 
reported by fglrxinfo and glxinfo.  can't find the problem now but i 
will work on it.

googleearth works again, glxgears shows a bump in performance over the 
open-source driver, so far i'm happy.

anyone interested in a xorg.conf for this driver with dual-head?
