Term problem

One of the first things I did after this Gutsy installation was install
midnight commander. Problem is it displays fine in the Gnome terminal, 
but in rxvt ( which is my favourite) the box characters are
displayed as other characters such as accented letters etc. Is there an 
easy fix for this? I googled the problem but
only came up with the suggestion " add export TERM=xterm"  to  .bashrc, 
or profile. I did that but obviously it didn't work.
