Desktop icons are too small

Yes.
Open the file management preferences[1]. On the "Views" tab under "Icon
View Defaults" select a bigger "Default zoom level".

[1] Since System / Preferences / File Management seems to be disabled by
default in Gutsy, open some Nautilus window - for example by selecting
Places / Home Folder - and open Edit / Preferences.
