building gutsy kernel

First howto page Google found me to do this is
http://www.howtoforge.com/kernel_compilation_ubuntu

I got .config made with make menuconfig. Then I did:

make-kpkg clean
fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-c kernel_image kernel_headers

The latter fails. Tail of screen messages is:

make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.22-12'
CHK include/linux/version.h
UPD include/linux/version.h
CHK include/linux/utsrelease.h
UPD include/linux/utsrelease.h
SYMLINK include/asm -> include/asm-i386
make[2]: *** No rule to make target `arch/i386/kernel/asm-offsets.c', needed
by `arch/i386/kernel/asm-offsets.s'. Stop.
make[1]: *** [prepare0] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.22-12'
make: *** [debian/stamp-kernel-conf] Error 2

Anyone know what needs fixing, or a better howto (one that works)?
