If you are the adventurous type, just boot both from a live cd you can
enable ssh on, and rsync the laptop drive from the desktop. Then reboot
the laptop using an install cd and fix the MBR. Reboot one more time
and tidy up any remaining problems. Hardware detection in linux is
good enough to make this usually work...
Alternately, 'reinstalling all the packages' isn't that bad - IIRC dpkg
will produce a list of all installed packages suitable to take to
another machine and duplicate....
