I have a Thinkpad T61p and my wife has a Thinkpad X60. X60 is working well
and it has the small size which my wife likes it.(But it will get hot
because the hard drive is under the palm strayer).
I installed Ubuntu 7.10 in T61p. Unfortunately the usplash doesn't work
since the amd64 framebuffer's bug. If you don't mind to disable it and see a
lot of text before gdm starts, it will be OK and everything else works fine.
I also have a Dell inspiron 1710. It's amazing that everything works fine
out of th box.

before and Dell treats linux more seriously than before. I don't have a HP
laptop, but I heard they did well in linux supporting.
So I think you can choose from thinkpad, dell and hp. Good luck.
