I understand your point, but I do think (from lots of experience with
such users) that people with no or just a little computer literacy would
often feel pressured, or at least they would grow a nagging doubt if
they should, and what the implications would be of doing it or not doing
it.

If you think it is a good idea, you could file a wishlist bug report or
a wiki page with possibly a blueprint in launchpad, and add some
description of use cases, and an outline of how it should work.
