Install hung- how's my old system?

I was doing a cold install on my Thinkpad R40 (before I commit to a
clean install on my "work" machine and I had a hang trying to access the
multiverse security repository just as you describe. I launched a
terminal window, "ps aux | grep apt" located the hung process that I
believe timed out. I killed it with a "kill -9" and poof, the install
restarted and finished. This is by no means a good practice BUT it will
get you to the point where you can configure the update manager
repositories and run the update.
Best of luck!

It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion,
it is by the beans of java that thoughts acquire speed,
the hands acquire shaking,
the shaking becomes a warning,
it is by caffeine alone that I set my mind afire.
............It's also cheaper than Prozac.
