I believe Ubuntu will automatically detect the NIC. You then can set it up
from System > Administration > Network
What do you mean by join workgroup?
1. If you just want to read windows share, just use the menu: Places > Network
2. If you want to join 'windows' domain, you should adjust the needed
parameters: pam.d, nsswitch, nsslib, kerberos, etc. Use authconfig for
simplicity.
