The MBR is the first sector on a disk. Grub lives in your /boot partition if
you have one. Otherwise, Grub lives in the /boot/grub directory on your /
partition. When Grub is "installed" to the MBR, it means Grub's alter ego is
located there, whose purpose is to redirect the boot process to the location
where Grub actually lives. One doesn't normally "backup" Grub. Reinstalling
it is the normal procedure to follow if Grub gets broken. You can, and I do,
backup Grub's menu config file: /boot/grub/menu.lst.
