Skype is available in the medibuntu repository.  Check their site for
how to get stuff from it:  http://medibuntu.org/

Deluge is a pretty nice torrent client, very close to uTorrent on
Windows.  It's not in the respositories right now, IIRC.  There is a
.deb file available on their website which is easy enough to install:
http://deluge-torrent.org/   -- I can't tell you if this will improve
your speed, as there are many factors in how fast bittorrent downloads
go.
