mysterious app failure

I've been running a program in Perl which uses Mysql and should take 
a couple of days to finish. It stopped for no reason I'm aware of - 
have looked at the mysql log and system & kernel logs and found nada. 
The output file got pretty big - over 792MB, but there is lots of hd 
space available so I'm at a loss to understand the problem.

Ok it could obviously just be the program itself (one I've written 
fwiw) except that I restarted it just before the input rec it failed 
at and it's been going fine since, so far. Am wondering if there is 
some sort of system wide limitation I might have reached, and if so 
it I could find a reference in one of the log files to show me the 
specific error.
