Congratulations! You mastered one of the more annoying steps for a new
Ubuntu user. All other beginner tasks are a piece of cake compared to
this.

Little by little is a good approach. In due time, you will know a
lot. :)

I'm happy that I could help. It would be interesting to compile numbers,
but even without them I am pretty confident that the mailing list has a
very good track record in resolving issues, providing that the person
who asked the question is willing to read and learn as well as you were.

It's certainly possible to do this, but I would not recommend it just
yet. Since Totem is the default player in Ubuntu, it is used for more
than just as a stand-alone player. For example, video viewing in the web
browser, Firefox, is also implemented with Totem. Hence, if you remove
it, you will have more work to do to make kaffeine perform all of
Totem's tasks, which is probably more trouble than you want right now.

Totem uses just 8 MB when installed, as much as one or two mp3 music
files. As long as it is not being started by the user, it does not
consume any other resources.
If you want to make kaffeine the default movie player when you
doubleclick a movie file, you can associate it with those files:
rightclick a movie file, choose "Properties", then go to the tab "Open
with", and select kaffeine.
If you don't want to see Totem in the "Applications" menu, just
rightclick the menu, "Applications", choose "Edit Menus", and hide the
entry.

When you know the system a bit better later, you can still go and remove
it.

I was just concerned about your ease of learning. Of course you are
welcome to stay on this list.

Though if I had a wish, I'd wish that nobody used Hotmail accounts.
Hotmail seems to do weird things to the emails that are sent from it,
and replying and quoting is a royal pain -- all the line breaks and line
spacings are messed up. Of course that's just my naive wish, you are
free to use whatever you want (though others might not reply as
readily ...)
Does anyone have a cure for this, I'm using Evolution?
