unable to ping LAN

I have a new 2.6.20-15-server #2 installation which seems to be
working pretty well. I can ssh in and out, access the web and access
samba shares from the win xp workstation which is also the gateway.
What I can't do is ping any box on the lan by name other than the
gateway. Can ping by ip though. Didn't think hosts had to be set up -
want hosts for the lan to be resolved by the gateway.
