Boot screen: Quiet or not?

Actually, if you set your framebuffer vga= to a small enough size you
can get both the splash and the text :-)  Splash on top half of the
screen, text on the lower. Can't remember exactly how I did it
previously, but that's how mine was set up before I upgraded to Gutsy.
Best of both worlds :-)
