changing user with SU, gives "Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server"

This is normal - X doesn't give other users access to your display.  That's
why we have gksu/gksudo/kdesu.

otoh, I routinely use sudo, get those messages, and apps still work as
expected anyway!
