Hunting a hidden Video bug

     A friend of mine uses the same software, no tarballs, and relies on 
the repos for all the software, just so he doesn't find new problems. 
He's had a GeForce 4 (as I have) for a long time now and wants to try 
something newer.....because he's only been able to get the legacy driver 
to work with it, somehow.  He's using the same hardware and can't get 
the proprietary driver to work.  So yeah, something's wrong.

     Today I mentioned that he should have palette snooping off. His was 
on.  Are there any other things like this to check for, that might be 
getting in the way?
