Beryl and compiz both work fine on my T30, which does actually have the
Radeon Mobility 7500 in it, though it has less VRAM than your T42.
It works fine with the opensource radeon driver, but you have to tell
DRI to handle large textures in /etc/drirc (just put
<option name="allow_large_textures" value="2" />
in that file).
Also, if you have only 16M (as my T30 does), you need to run in 16bpp
mode, which has to be set in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
