System->Preferences_>Removable Drives amd Media - under the "Storage" tab,

Make sure the following are checked:

 "Mount removable drives when hot-plugged"
 "Mount removable media when inserted"
"Auto-open files on new drives and media"

Under the "Multimedia" tab, check the "Play audio CD discs when inserted
is checked, and that the command has "sound-juicer -d %d" in.

If all the above check out OK, can you find out if "hald" is running (ps
aux | grep hald | less) ? If it isn't there's your problem. It should
run at startup but I've seen instances where it fails, you can force it
to run again with "sudo hald &"
