AMD64 vs. i386, any new observations?

Is there currently any way to switch from i386 to AMD64 without having
to reformat my hard drive? I want to switch but don't want to lose my
other files, and unfortunately my drive isn't partitioned correctly to
format just the /usr and /boot and /lib stuff.

Thanks,
Lorenzo
