Gutsy crashes - Any popular reasons / any log that could help me identify the cause

Recently got Gutsy installed in my Inspiron 6000 laptop (Dual boot with XP). Installed it fine, but Gutsy freezes often. Once while using firefox, once during GIMP.. Is there a way to identify the cause for these freezes/crashes. I am having to reboot whenever this happens.
When I used Redhat many years back, I used to kill and restart the gnome by moving to the text terminal. But the keyboard also gets stuck in this case.
Please help !!!
