Compiz and darkening windows (that hang).

I don't understand what compiz defines as "hung".  For example, when I 
try to open a file dialog in ff, it will hang and darken.  This makes no 
sense to me.  I'd rather not have that "feature" .. has anyone ever 
figured a way to turn it off?
