LAMP and web folder

It is possible to setup virtual directories in your home directory but
I had some bad experiences with that, so can't really help on that.
Since I'm the only user on my computer I'm the only one who has access
to /var/www and I just created a directory there, did a chmod 777 on
it and set the permissions to my user (chown -R
<username>:<groupname>).

I think HowtoForge <http://www.howtoforge.com/howtos/linux/ubuntu>
might have a detailed tutorial about it.
