Why are you installing the nVidia driver from their binaries? It's in
the repositories, just install the package nvidia-glx (sudo aptitude
install nvidia-glx) and run sudo nvidia-xconfig or alternatively
edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf as root and change nv to nvidia.
