firefox /thunderbird settings?

I confess, I am slow to change, and until recently was still using the
full Mozilla suite.
Now, I am using Firefox and Thunderbird.
It's okay.
But, how do I tell Thunderbird to open links from e-mails
in a new window, rather than a new tab?
Or, ideally, to give me an option when clicking a link, since,
sometimes I prefer a new window, and other times a new tab...
This was easily done in moz with a rt-click.
I can't find this in thunderbird or firefox preferences.
Currently, if there is already a firefox window open, it just
opens a new tab, without asking me what I would prefer.

thanks,
tony
