Regarding the version, type this in a console: cat /etc/issue

If you're running the final version, there will be no output like RC,
release candidate or such.

Regarding the webcam, I don't know. Look here:
http://fosswire.com/2007/08/12/quick-review-logitech-quickcam-communicate-stx/,
it should work. Try this: plug it in, and enter "dmesg | tail" in a
console, to see if it was detected and what action was taken.
