1. Don't panic :)
2. Install the workaround mentioned in the launchpad thread.
3. Uninstall smartmontools (increased the count rate on my machine).

Well, you could skip step 3 and check the counter after some days of 
normal operation. The conter will increase by 1 anyway each time you shut 
down or suspend or reboot.
