Playing a DVD

I have tried all the instructions given by the Ubuntu Help pages to no
avail.

I have been able to download 'gxine' but the following are no longer
recognised:- libdvdnav4 - libdvdplay0 - libdvdread3.

As I am new to Ubuntu -  (my Windows XP Home Edition was wiped when the
Ubuntu installation disk was loaded!!!!!!!!!) (any ideas for that as
well???)  I am feeling the frustration of trying my best and getting
absolutely nowhere.
