Serious boot problem and no splash screen on new laptop

Because the kernel's use of framebuffer is broken...  we all have problems 
with the boot process.  

You might try adding back the splash option to your kernel line but leave the 
vga option there.   Might work, might not.   Every machine seems to be 
different based on the video setup.
