Great, but I still don't know how to create one the
linux way. My post asked for that info or at least
inferred it strongly.

chata at ubuntu:/etc$ hostname -f
ubuntu
lchata at ubuntu:/etc$
I tried all the options and they either gave "ubuntu"
or nothing.
lchata at ubuntu:/etc$
I'm not sure what NIS

lchata at ubuntu:/etc$ cat hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 ubuntu
192.168.1.64 ubuntu
and

lchata at ubuntu:/etc$ cat resolv.conf
search gateway.2wire.net
nameserver 192.168.1.254
Ok, the above and what I posted suggested to me that:
"ubuntu.gateway.2wire.net." as corrected by NoOp is
what my FQDN should be but what I need to know and
don't is where to add it and how? Do I issue a command
for hosts or hostname or what. Or do I just nano into
some etc file and add the correct FQDN. A source that
is explicit would be fine. I suppose that I'll have
to go modify muttrc and main.cf to get root mail
working also. I just need a little help here, then go
back to mutt and postfix again and change the hosts
entries.
Thanks for you help; just need a little more. It's
much appreciated.
