Unerase Files

Is there some command or tool I can use to unerase a folder and the files in
it?

I used the "Move to Trash" in Nautilus, but when I went to the Trash to
restore the files, the Trash was empty!! and yet the folder and it's files
were gone ... :O(

I searched the package manager and the only thing that looks like it might
do the trick is "gddrescue", but before I make things worse I thought I had
better ask what's the best approach.
