No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.

I can not play and audio.   The volume control icon is showing there
is a problem (red no entry sign) and I am getting 'No volume control
GStreamer plugins and/or devices found' error.

ben at heron:~$ lspci | grep Audio

Controller (rev 10)

ben at heron:~$ alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

I have just upgraded to gutsy:(

Any ideas?
