xinerama and docking station?

Folks;

after Toshiba finally managed to deliver our docking stations, I am
struggling to get my screen configuration set up right. Environment:
Tecra A8 notebook (1280x800 display) and external LG Flatron 1952
(1280x1024), Intel i945GM display controller.

What I would like to have is something like that:

- Xinerama setup with the external display being the "main" screen
while being docked

- "normal" (notebook-display only) video setup while being offline.

Is there an easy way to set up something like this in gutsy? Has anyone
so far bothered trying such a setup?
