ubuntu 7.10 live cd does not boot on new system

I did check the cd for defects (it was ok) and use the cd to boot on a
different pc (that worked).
I am beginning to suspect that the recent winxp install image did something
"special" with/to the hdrive. I need to re-install the os to change hdisk
partition sizes or to add a new partition.
(this is pretty annoying)
btw this is a sata drive.
