Package gfortran is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package gfortran has no installation candidate

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gfortran
or
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gfortran-4.2
should do it. (Execute one of the lines in italics in the console)

Not a direct answer but:
g77 3.4 is pretty old (as seen by the fact that it pulls in gcc 3.4),
you might try using gfortran instead, as that is the fortran compiler
that goes with current versions of gcc.
