Problem with Archiving .tar

You didn't mention that.  Then, when you try to do this from the GUI, does
anything get written to .xsession_errors? What does "ps ux" show while it's
trying to run?  I would expect there to be a process running "tar", and it
would be interesting to know what exactly is the command line it's using.
