Basically, you can simply insert the card, e.g. a USB-stick and use
sudo mkfs.vfat /dev/xxxxxx
(or whatever your choice of file system is) and where xxxxxx is the
partition you want to format (please take extra care not to accidentally
reformat your hard disk, e.g. for me it would be
sudo mkfs.vfat /dev/sdb1

 So in the end, it's the same as formating a hard drive partition.
